Eversong in the Old World: My Blood Elf Army

So this year seems to be the year of new projects.
In part, and rather ironically, that’s down to losing my job several months ago. I could probably write an entire blog post about how ruined the job market is, but suffice to say I’m back in employment now.
What the last few months have done, however, is give me an excuse to dig through my garage and surface various ideas and models I’d collected but never actually got around to finishing. Things like my new Praetorian Guardsmen, or my old/new Warriors of Arnor army.
Another example is the subject of this blog: my High Elf Blood Elf army. Or, at least, the start of it.
I’ve long lamented the end of the Warhammer Fantasy world. And even though it’s technically back in the form of The Old World, my enthusiasm for it isn’t quite what it used to be. While the game is back, we all know how the story ends. Everyone dies. What’s the point?

However, one of the few armies I never got around to collecting during WFB’s heyday was the High Elves. That, and the Bretonnians — although I turned those into Space Marines.
I’d long looked at the High Elves and wanted to start a collection, but there’s only so much you can do at any given time, and back then I already had plenty of WFB armies on the go. I had time, I wrongly assumed.
WFB isn’t going anywhere...
Then The Old World was brought back, and the old models returned to the webstore. However, because I never actually got around to collecting High Elves back in the day, the models didn’t have quite the same nostalgia for me as, say, a classic Chaos Warrior. They’re also eye-wateringly expensive for such old sculpts.
So, as I sat around in current year thinking about finally painting some High Elves, I had a thought:
What are Age of Sigmar models good for?
Converting into 40K models, or sticking on square bases!
Which is a long-winded way of saying that I’m going to use many of the newer Lumineth Realm-lords models for my High Elf force.
Some older High Elf models will still make an appearance, such as the White Lion Chariot, but newer sculpts are newer sculpts, and while I’ll never give Age of Sigmar a chance, the models are mostly an improvement.
So the only thing left to decide was the colour scheme.
I was sorely tempted to go with the traditional blue and white, but there was another idea I’d always wanted to try:
A Blood Elf army.
For anyone who spent many hours questing through Eversong Woods, the Blood Elf aesthetic from World of Warcraft is something else. I’m going to link the music from that zone now, in the hope that you’ll listen to it while reading the rest of this blog.
The autumnal colours, golds, reds and contrasting fel green have always made the Blood Elves instantly recognisable. It’s a fantastic palette.
So the colour scheme was decided.
I’m not going to say these are Blood Elves, because we’re in the Warhammer world after all. I also imagine their home somewhere in the Old World, deep within an autumnal forest not unlike Eversong Woods. But wherever I can add a little more of a Blood Elf twist, beyond simply the colours, I certainly will.
For example, my first unit was a unit of White Lions, but painted more like the Springpaw
Lynx from the Blood Elf starting zone.
I also had a box of Vanari Auralan Sentinels sitting idle in the garage, waiting for this project. So they were painted and added to the army. Luckily the newer version of the game, The Old World has done away with 20mm bases. While I didn't want to see them disappear, it makes basing the newer AoS models on square bases that little bit easier.
The defences are attached to the movement tray via magnets and I added some corner details to the trays to help sell the Blood Elf theme too.
There are currently 11 in the unit as I made another figure using the spare bow from the champion and some original High Elf parts. I'll be on the lookout for one more Vanari Sentinel on ebay.
I also added small yellow and red flowers to the bases. I don’t remember there being many flowers in the rather aged textures of Warcraft, but I wanted the bases to bring in those same colours found throughout Eversong Woods. Besides, I can’t exactly model trees onto everyone’s bases.
I’m not sure when the next unit will be completed. I’m currently trying to work out the best way to make Elven cavalry riding giant birds.
After all, the race-specific mount for the Blood Elves is the Hawkstrider...
I’ll figure it out, I’m sure.
